Pretty Angel
This tutorial was created on October 27, 2002. If it bears any resemblance to another tutorial on the net, it is pure coincidence. The skills that you will learn here are your own, and I hope that you will find them useful.
In this tutorial, I will assume that you have a basic working knowledge of PSP, and is made for the intermediate skill level. I will not be using screen shots in this tutorial. If you have any trouble, feel free to contact me, and I will do what I can to help.
These are the materials that you will need: You will need Paint Shop Pro, or course. I use Version 7.04, but I am sure it will work in other versions as well. You can download a trial version of Paint Shop Pro from COREL. You will also need Super Blade Pro and your favorite gold preset.
This tutorial uses Selections, and you can download the selections and the feather images HERE. You can extract the sel files to your selections folder in PSP.
**Hint-You do not have to put the selection files in your PSP. You can put them anywhere on your hard drive where you can remember where they are. You can also create a special folder in your PSP Selections and organize them for future use.
Open the feather psp image included in the zip, and you can minimize it for later.
I have also included a color palette that we will be using in order to create our angel. Here is the color chart that you can copy and paste into PSP.

- Open a new image, 500 by 424, 72 million colors on a transparent background. Name it and save it now, and don't forget to save it after every step.
- New Raster Layer and name it Head. Selection/Load from Disk the 1angelhead.sel and flood fill with black #000000.
- Selection/Modify/Contract. Now Contract by 2, and flood fill with the light flesh color #FDE4C8. Do not Deselect.
- Effects/Inner Bevel and use the following settings: Pie shaped bevel, width=30, smoothness=100, depth=7, ambience and shininess=0, angle=335, color=white, intensity=43, and elevation=30. Deselect.
- New Raster Layer, and name it Left Arm. Selection/Load from Disk 2angelleftarm.sel
- Flood Fill with black.
- Selection/Modify/Contractand contract by 2, and flood fill with same flesh color. add the same Inner Bevel that we did before, and then deselect.
- New Raster Layer and name it Right Arm. Load from disk 3angelrightarm.sel
- Flood Fill with black, Modify/contract by 2, Flood Fill with the same flesh color, and add the same Inner Bevel, and then deselect.
- New Raster Layer, and name it Dress. Flood Fill the selection with black, Modify/Contract by 2 and Flood Fill with white. Leave selected.
- New Raster Layer, and name it Frost. We are going to add some texture to the gown.
- Foreground is white, and go to your Air Brush tool, using the following settings: Shape=round, size=100, hardness=50, opacity=65, step=25 and density=20. With your Air Brush we will sweep down the length of the gown. Now add your favorite Super Blade Pro preset. I used a gold, but you can use any color that suites your fancy.
- New Raster Layer and name it Sash. Load the 13angelsash.sel, and flood fill with black.
- Selection/Modify/Contract by 2, and flood fill with D_Goldfold that I supplied in the zip, angle=90 and scale=100.
** You can do this by opening the image on your workspace in PSP, and then on your Style Palette, click on the arrow on the right hand side. Then select the texture (dots) option, and then click on the square. A box will pop up, and you can scroll through and find the gold tile, set the scale and angle, and flood fill the sash. Deselect. - Now go to your Layer Pallet, and turn down the opacity to 50%. You will see a bunch of numbers all on the right hand side of the layer pallet. Grab the sliders (little arrows) and slide them over until the number is 50 for the sash layer.
- Turn off the head, and both arms and the background layer. With one of the dress layers activated, go to Layers/Merge/Merge Visible. Rename this layer Dress. (Right click on the layer pallet, and choose "rename" and then type in the name for the layer.) You can turn the other layers back on now.
- Make sure that your Head layer is now activated on the layer pallet. New Raster Layer, and name it Right Eye. Load the 5angelrighteye.sel and flood fill with black. Modify/Contract by 1 and flood fill with white. Deselect.
- Using your Paint Brush tool, shape=round, size 13, and color #8080FF, hardness=90, Opacity and Density at 100 and step is 25, make a blue dot towards the bottom of the white part of the eye, but not covering the black line.
- Now, change your size to 5, and your color to black, and put a pupil in the middle of the blue part of the eye. Now change the size to 1 and the color to white, and put a little white highlight on the blue part of the eyeball, about half way down.
- Effects/Blur/Gaussian Blur of .5
- New Raster Layer, and name it Right Eyelid. Load the 6angelrighteyelid.sel and flood fill with black. Modify/Contract by 1 and flood fill with the flesh color again. Do not deselect.
- New Raster Layer and name it shadow. White is in the foreground, and the blue color is in the background... Switch your foreground style to Gradient, and select the #3 Fading Background, inverted checked, and Sunburst Gradient. H and V are 50 and repeats=0. Flood Fill the eyelid with the gradient, and then turn down the opacity for this layer to 50.
- Turn off everything except the Right eye, lid and shadow layers, and then Merge/Visible. You can name this one Right Eye.
- New Raster Layer and name this one Left Eye. Load from disk 7angellefteye.sel and flood fill with black. Modify/Contract by 1 and flood fill with white. Repeat steps 19-21 to complete the eye ball.
- New Raster Layer and load from disk 8angellefteyelid.sel and flood fill with black. Modify/Contract by 1 and flood fill with the flesh color. Do not deselect, and then repeat steps 23 for the shadow.
- Turn off everything except the left eye, left lid and shadow. Make sure that one of the left eye layers is activated, and then Layers/Merge/Merge Visible. Rename this layer Left Eye.
- New Raster Layer, and name it Lashes. Load from disk 10angellashes.sel and flood fill with black. Deselect.
- New Raster Layer and name it Nose. Using the second color in the color palette #D0926E Paint Brush and size 5, make a dot where the nose should be. Going back to the light flesh color, make a 2 pixel dot on the top part of the nose.
- Gaussian Blur of 1, and then add an Inner Bevel with these settings: shape=Pie width=3 smoothness=15 depth and ambience=5 shininess=25 color=white angle=315 intensity 41 and elevation=32
- New Raster Layer and name it Lips. Load from disk 9angellips.sel and flood fill it with the dark red color on the palette, or #940A00.
- Using your Retouch tool, set to Darken RGB, round size=2, hardness=0 opacity and density=50, and step=25 swipe across the lips to darken the separation between them. You might want to zoom in.
- Change your Retouch tool to Lighten RGB, round size=2, hardness=0 opacity=95 step=35 density=100 and make some highlights on your lips, on the upper lip and the bottom lip. When you are finished making your highlights, you might want to smudge them just a tad with your Smudge tool.
- New Raster Layer, named Cheeks. Foreground color is the third color on the palette, or #E1ADA4. Using your Paint Brush, round, size 25 make two dots under the eyes where the cheeks should be. Add a Gaussian Blur of 7%.
- New Raster Layer and name it Front Hair. Change your foreground color to white, and switch to the Air Brush, using the same setting that you had before, but changing the size to 50. Lightly add some angel hair to your head, concentrating on the top black line. Make sure that the black line is covered, as you spray your hair into place.
- New Raster Layer, and name it Back Hair. Go to your layer palette, and drag this layer down under the Head layer. Then spray some hair around the neck line with your Air Brush.
- Activate your feather image, and Copy it. Then go back to your main image, and Edit/Paste as a New Layer. You will want to turn off all other layers during this step. We will be making the wings.
- With your feather layer active, Layers/Duplicate. Image/Rotate to the right at 20%. Move down the feather so that the two bottom ends meet. Repeat this twice more so that you have a total of four feathers. Layers/Merge/Merge Visible.
- Layers/Duplicate, and then Image/Resize by 75%, resize all layers UNCHECKED. Rotate this layer to the right by 10%, and line up the ends of the two wing sections. Repeat this step.
- Layers/Merge/Merge Visible and rename this layer Wing1.
- Turn the other layers back on, and move the wing into position behind the right shoulder. Layers/Arrange/Send to Bottom.
- With your Selection tool set at Rectangle, feather=0 make a large rectangular selection around your wings, and then click in the middle of the rectangle to select the wings.
- New Raster Layer and name it wing highlights. With your Air Brush tool, size=100 and color=white swipe around the ends of the feathers. Apply the same Blade Pro preset that you used on the dress. Deselect.
- Layers/Duplicate and Image Mirror. Turn on your other layers, and you are done! You can decorate the angel with a little bow on the color or flowers for her hair, or whatever you want.
- At this point, you can Layers/Merge/Merge Visible. You can save this as a tube, or add a background, or frame it how ever you like!
If you are doing this for a group, do not forget to resize to their specifications. Don't forget to sharpen after your resize, and thank you for doing one of my tutorials!
