Round Picture Frame

This tutorial is my own idle time creation, and any resemblance to another tutorial similar to it is by pure coincidence, and the nature of the software.  I am using no outside filters for this tutorial, but you could modify parts of it to use with your favorite filters as desired.  I love to modify tutorials, and make them my own work, so be creative, and have fun!

    Materials Needed

Some of the supplies that I have provided, you might already have in your Patterns folder, and if you do, you do not have to put them in again, but it seems that every time that I write a tutorial, someone somewhere does not have one of the required elements, so I put everything that you will need in the zip. Download the bmp files to your Patterns folder in PSP, and the pbv file to the Presets folder.

The image of the gulls is my own, taken on a recent trip to Florida.  You may use this picture for the purposes of this tutorial or use one of your own pictures.  I reserve the copyright to this picture, and it is not in public domain, so if you want to use it for any other purpose including posting it on the internet, you need my permission.

I will not remind you between each step, but please save your image often, so that you will not lose all of your hard work.

  1. Open a new image, 400 x 400, transparent background and 16 million colors.

  2. New Raster Layer, and call it "inner ring".  Set your foreground to Pattern, and select D_Goldfold, Scale=200.  Your background is null.

  3. Using your Preset Shapes, Ellipse, vector and antialias checked, line width=8, draw a large circle starting at 50/50 and going to 350/350.

  4. Object/Align/Center in Canvas.  (This is to make sure it is centered)

  5. Layers/Convert to Raster Layer.

  6. Selections/Select All.  Selections/Float.  Now your gold ring should be selected. Selections/Defloat.

  7. Selections/Modify/Contract by 2.

  8. Flood fill with the Diamond pattern, Scale=100.  Do not Deselect.

  9. New Raster Layer and call it "outer ring".

  10. Layers/Arrange/Move Down.  Selections/Modify/Expand by 12.

  11. Flood fill with the gold pattern, Scale=200.

  12. Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel using the gullframe preset.

    The settings should be:
    Shape=the one that looks like the top of a baby carriage pointing right, Width=10 Smoothness=16 Depth=4 Ambience=0 Shininess=0 Angle=315 Intensity=50 Elevation=30 Color=White.

    Deselect.

  13. Take your magic wand, and click outside of the ring.  Selections/Invert.

  14. New Raster Layer and call it "wood".

  15. Layers/Arrange/Send to Bottom.  Selections/Modify/Expand by 25.

  16. Flood fill with the finished wood pattern, Scale=100 Angle=90.

  17. Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel using the Round preset.  Deselect.

  18. Go back to the "outer circle" layer.  With your magic wand, feather and tolerance set at 0, click on the inside of your circle.  Selections/Modify/Expand by 2px.

  19. New Raster layer called "image".  Open your picture of the gulls, or one of your own that you would like to use.  Edit/Copy.  Edit/Paste/Into Selection.  Keep Selected.

  20. New Raster Layer called "cutout".  Effects/3D Effects/Cutout with these settings: V=-1 H=-4 Opacity=100 Blur=70 Color=#000000 Fill Interior=unchecked.  Leave selected.

  21. New Raster Layer called "highlights".  Set your Foreground to solid color, and make it white.  Paint Brush, Size=30 Hardness=0 Opacity 100 Step=25 Density=100.  Draw a few lines on your picture to make it look like light glinting off of glass.

  22. Effects/Blur/Gaussian Blur of 8

  23. Now on your layer palette, turn the blend mode to Luminance in version 7 or Luminance Legacy in 9.  Deselect.

  1. Saving a Picture Frame - Version 7

If you would like to save this frame to use as a picture frame in PSP, go back to your inner ring layer, and using your magic wand, click anywhere in the center.  Go to the wood layer, which should be on the bottom of the layer palette, and hit the Delete key on your keyboard once.

  2. Turn off your image, cutout and highlight layers, and merge the visible layers.

  3. Copy the merged layer, and Paste it as a new image.  This will get rid of unwanted space around the frame, as well.

  4. Using your magic wand, tolerance set at 200, click inside the empty space on the frame.

  5. Click anywhere ON the frame, and then hold down the Shift key, and click inside again.

  6. Selections/Save to Alpha Channel, and save it as anything that you want to call it.

  7. File/Save As and browse to the PSP Frames folder, and give your frame a name.

  8. Using the Paint Shop Pro Browser, find the Frames Folder, and the file that you just saved.  Change the extension for your frame from psp to pfr, and it is ready to use on any of your projects!

  1. Saving a Picture Frame - Version 8 and 9

  4. File/Export As/Picture Frame, and give your frame a name.  This should be ready to use as a picture frame the next time that you want to use it!

Thank you for doing my tutorial, and I hope that you enjoyed it!
