In this tutorial we will be learning about selections, where to save them, and how to use them in Paint Shop Pro.    I have included many screen shots in this tutorial, so I will be spreading this out over two pages, to help with the download time.

You will need Paint Shop Pro, which if you do not have it, you can download a trial version from JASC.

You will also need my zip file with the selections.  Download the zip HERE.  Don't worry, this is not one of those tutorials with a million selections...  This tutorial is intended for the very beginner in PSP to learn about selections, and how to use them.  When you learn the basics, you can go on to the million, zillion selection tutorials, and really have fun!

This zip only has two selections, and you can save the zip to your hard drive.  You will need a software like Winzip or Filzip to unzip them.  If you don't have one, you can get a really easy one to unzip your files with at FilZip.com

When you have opened the zip, you can save the selection files to a folder of your choice on your hard drive.  There is a folder for selections in Paint Shop Pro, but you do not have to save it there.  You can create a folder anywhere in your My Documents files, where you can remember where you put them.  I make a separate folder for each tutorial that I do, because many of the selections in various tutorials are called "hands  or "face", and you won't have to keep overwriting the files, and they will all be in the right folder.

Now that we have all of our materials...  Let's get started!  Set your foreground to #000000 (Black) and your background to #FFFF40 (Yellow).

Make a new image 300 x 300, background transparent.  (File/New and then type in 300 in the height and width areas, pixels is the unit of measure, and choose 72 for the resoulution)

You will see the tool bar at the top, and it should look like this:

You will see that I have circled the Layers button.  Click on that button, and choose New Raster Layer.

You should give your new layer a name on the layers property box that pops up.  Just type in a name that you will remember, and click OK.  I called this layer FACE.  This makes it a lot easier to go back and find the layer that you want when you DO have a zillion selections.

Now look back up on the tool bar at the top of your workspace.  This time we will choose Selections.

We will be loading this selection from the our Hard Drive, in the folder where we have saved it, so select Load from Disk, and browse through your folders until you find the outsidecircle.sel, select that, and click OPEN to open it in your image.
